The Koutoubia Mosque was built in the late 12th century. Construction began around 1158 and was completed during the reign of the Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansur, who ruled from 1184 to 1199. The mosque was constructed on the site of a former Almoravid mosque, which was demolished by the Almohads as part of their efforts to establish their architectural and cultural identity. The Koutoubia Mosque is one of the most important examples of Almohad architecture and remains a key landmark in Marrakesh.
